Get Free Preventive Care

Preventive care is medical care, such as screenings, that helps you stay healthy. Check to see if your screenings are considered preventive care.

Preventive care is sometimes called a:

  • Well visit

  • Check-up

  • Yearly physical

It can include vaccines and screenings to protect against diseases or find an illness before you start feeling sick so you can get treatment for it.

The Affordable Care Act says that in-network preventive care is free, even before you reach your deductible.

“We have a Facebook page and the members are all, in my case, breast cancer survivors. We’ve had somebody post on there, ‘Hey, I just recently found out my mammograms are not fully covered.’ They’ll be discounted by insurance, but insurance won’t pay all of it.”

Special tip

Sometimes doctors do screenings to diagnose an illness, or check to see if your cancer has returned or spread.

If your doctor suggests a test to diagnose an illness or check to see if a cancer has returned or spread, it might not be free.

Talk to your doctor and insurance plan to find out how you will be billed for this care if you are unsure.
