Copayments (Copay) and Coinsurance

To share the cost of your care, some plans have copayments (also called copays, for short).

  • Copays are a fixed amount you pay each time you get health care services that are covered by your insurance.

  • Your copay amount depends on the type of care you get. For example, after you reach your deductible, you might have:

    • $20 copay for a primary care visit

    • $50 copay for a specialist visit

    • $10 copay for generic drugs.

Some plans have coinsurance to share the cost of care after you reach your deductible:

  • If your plan has coinsurance, you pay a percent of your health care bill and your plan pays the rest.

  • Most plans have coinsurance that ranges from 10% to 40%. This means that after you reach your deductible, you pay 10–40% of the bill and your insurance pays the rest.

You might want to look for an insurance plan without coinsurance if you are worried about how much you might pay for health care. It is often hard to know the exact amount you will owe in coinsurance until you get your bill.
