Welcome Let’s learn Tips to lower care costs Let’s review Your estimated cost Resources

Talk with your insurance company about your coverage and costs

Your insurance company can explain what your plan paid and how much you owe for your health care.

Write down your questions before you talk to your insurance company:

  • During the conversation, take notes.

  • After the conversation, list the date, a brief summary, and the name of the person you spoke with.

  • If calling about a bill, have the bill number and date of service ready.

  • Consider asking the insurance company if you can be assigned to a case manager so you can talk with the same person each time you call.

If the insurance company denies coverage for a health care service, you may still be able to get it covered. To find out:

  • Ask your doctor’s office to talk to the insurance company.

  • Call the insurance company and tell them why you think it should be covered. If needed, ask them how to file an appeal, which is a request to the insurance company to change a decision it has made about your coverage.

  • If you have insurance through your job, talk to your Human Resources (HR) department. Ask them to talk to the insurance company.
